My1040NR provides tax preparation software and general educational information about US tax filing for international students and scholars. My1040NR is not a tax advisor, CPA firm, law firm, or paid tax return preparer, and using this site does not create an advisor and client relationship.

Content on this site, including the residency checker, is general information based on IRS publications. It is not advice for your specific situation. Tax treaties, residency determinations, and filing obligations depend on individual facts. For complex cases, including dual-status years, treaty positions that override the tax code, prior years filed on the wrong form, and any notice from the IRS, consult a qualified tax professional who works with nonresident aliens.

My1040NR is a private product. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the US Department of the Treasury, any university, or any government agency. IRS forms and publications referenced on this site are US government works. Form numbers such as 1040-NR and 8843 are used descriptively to identify the forms the software helps prepare.

We do not guarantee any refund, tax outcome, or acceptance of any return. You are responsible for reviewing your completed return for accuracy before you sign and file it, and for keeping copies of your returns and supporting documents.

Terms of use

• The service is currently in development. The public site provides information and a waitlist only. It does not file, transmit, or submit any document to the IRS or to any state.
• When return preparation launches, the product is a downloadable PDF only. My1040NR will not transmit, e-file, or submit your return to anyone. You are the filer: you review, sign, and mail your own return.
• There are no user accounts. Preparation happens in a single session, and the information you enter is not saved on our servers for later retrieval. There is no save and resume feature, by design.
• Your Social Security number or ITIN is requested only at the final step, immediately before your PDF is generated, because it is needed to print on the forms. It is not requested at the start and is not retained after your session.
• When return preparation launches, the software will prepare forms based on the information you provide. You are responsible for the completeness and accuracy of that information.
• The service is free for students. Free means no charge for the features described on the pricing page, with no credit card required.
• You may not use the service to prepare a return you know to be false, or to submit another person's information without their authorization.
• Deadlines shown on this site follow the IRS calendar for the stated tax year and can change. The IRS website, irs.gov, is the authoritative source.
• We may update these terms. Material changes will be posted on this page with a new date.

Privacy policy

• This public site collects only the email address you submit to the waitlist, and basic anonymous analytics if enabled. It does not collect Social Security numbers, ITINs, income, or any tax return data.
• We do not sell personal information. Waitlist emails are used only to send launch updates, and every message will include an unsubscribe link.
• The product is designed so there is no tax data to store: no accounts, no saved returns, one session, and information used only to generate the PDF you download in that session. This no-retention design is the core of our privacy model.
• Before return preparation launches, this policy will be finalized to describe exactly how session information is processed and discarded, consistent with IRS Publication 4557 and the FTC Safeguards Rule, and no real tax return will be prepared until that final policy is published.
• Residents of states with privacy laws, including the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act, may request access to or deletion of their personal data by contacting us through the address published at launch.
